Logging and Tracing is very
much part of development and
deployment environment for
Enterprise application using
Java and J2EE Technology.
One well known fact about any
Logging and tracing, be it
proprietary or open source,
is that, the dependency of
the application code on these
mechanism, like for example
if the logging and tracing
framework chosen to be log4j,
then the log4j related code
org.apache.log4j.Category category = org.apache.log4j.Category.getInstance("Class Name"); category.info(message); or category.log(Priority.WARN, message); or category.log(Priority.INFO, message); So on so forth. These lines of code should be added in the project/application code so as to use it. But imagine if at some point of time, there is a need arises for changing the existing Logging and tracing need of our application, by another framework, then one can guess how much impact in terms of change in all the code/files whose are to be identified and changed, compiled, rebuild and retest to certify that it works. There is a solution to this problem/dependency of application code with that of the logging and Tracing code. It is Commons logging from Apache. Apache Commons Logging provides cleaner logging code, which is independent of any concrete logging frameworks, and all logging frameworks are pluggable by configuration, be it during development or deployment. Hi,

I need to point my logging from Apache Commons
Logging to apache log4j logging without changing
logging code in any of my Java code file.

Is there a way to achieve it.

Please let me know.

Thanks and Regards,
Shariq Jamal

Hello,

I have written an article on how to use Apache Commons Logging framework, and can be found at following
link
in this site.

http://www.interview-questions-tips-forum.net/index.php/Apache-Log4j/Apache-Commons-Logging/with-Log4j-Example

Can you please write your question with little more elaborated?

I guess, commons logging is a way to provide abstration to
the way logging mechanism can be handled by program.
I think, you can replace Log4j to any other logging framework,
just by changing some configuration file, but how can
you replace common logging to Log4j without any code change?
