Java Object pass by value on
Java Technology
What precaution one has to take
while using String object passed
as argument in a method?

Ans:

As we know that objects are passed
by reference by value, that is when
a Java Object is passed to another
method as argument, it is the
reference of the Object is passed
as a value. That means, if any field
value of this object passed is
changed within the method body,
then the original object instance
value is changed.
A simple example demonstrate
this as follows:
....... ....... Sample sample = new Sample(); public Test() { sample.setId(3000); changeId(sample, 1000); System.out.println("Id value is: " + sample.getId()); } public void changeId(Object obj, int id) { Sample sample = (Sample)obj; sample.setId(id); } ...... ...... } class Sample { int id; public int getId() { return id; } public void setId(int id) { this.id = id; } } Here output is: **** Id value is: 1000 **** This means, the value of Id within sample is changed and is getting reflect in the original sample instance. But in case of String object, when it is passed by value, then any change within the method won't reflect in the original instance. ....... ....... String sample = new String("3000"); public Test() { changeId(sample, "1000"); System.out.println("Id value is: " + sample); } public void changeId(Object obj, String id) { String sample = (String)obj; sample = id; } ...... ...... Output comes out to be: **** Id value is: 3000 **** This article is open for discussions, please write your comments , suggestions, contradictions, other feedback.
