What is code coverage and how
to measure code coverage for
set of Java files?

Code coverage is to find out
exact lines of Java code are
called while executing Unit
test class files. This means
code coverage report tells the
percentage of lines of code
is tested by using Unit test
case class files. So by
measuring code coverage, one can
be able to understand how
effective is the unit test class
and how many lines of code
or business logic, these unit
test classes could able to
cover for testing purposes.
To my knowledge, most of these Open Source code coverage tools requires JUnit test case class files to measure code coverage. There are many tools or utilities available to measure code coverage such as: 1. Coverlipse : An open source plug-in for Eclipse, this requires projects source files and JUnit test case source files as input and shows code coverage on Eclipse screen. This makes this code coverage tool integrated with the development IDE. So it saves time during JUnit test class writing and testing and by simultaneously generating coverage information for the class under test. 2. cubertura : An Open Source tool, that requires JUnit and user defined JUnit TestCase class files to measure code coverage. It generates reports in HTML and XML format. It can be plugged in ANT scripts to generate code coverage report. It also generates Branch coverage report. Branch coverage is like showing/finding out about how many times a particular method/section of code are called/executed.
