 Purpose of Application server
can be as simple as to render
 pure static pages using HTML
 to complex enterprise web
 based application, taking care
of high volume of user base,
 good response, high availability,
 acceptable response time, secure,
 transactional and highly reliable.

In order to serve static pages, one can use Apache, Tomcat as web server, with good security in terms of configuration. But when it comes to complex business, it is always desirable to take this business layer to some other layer, or machine so as to take advantage of clustering and multiple machine processing power and multiple JVM and garbage collection. Then it is always desirable to go for some J2EE Technology based Application server (with EJB container in it).

One has to evaluate all existing options available today, whether it be Open Source, or Commercial, one has to understand all aspects like scalability, availability, cluster aware, load balancing etc features of application server before making a final decision. I shall to try to find and put many available application server available today.
