It is always better to have
some sort of build tool
(automated), configured for
one time, and can be used by
developement team, deployment
team, SCM team for managing
build process efficiently.
In an Enterprise application,
there could be many diverse
application or utilities packed
together under one EAR file,
and all dependent modules
should be available at right
place and with proper naming
conventions. If this is not
the case, then many man hours
can be	required to find the
right bug and which is costly
affair.
There are many build tools available from open source world. These can be configured to run periodically, automatically so as to avoid puting man hours for running and managing build process. Apache ANT : Open Source build framework for Java based applications. This can be very well integrated with IDE (Integrated Developement Environment) and can be extended to include some of user defined Tasks for some very specific use. You can find some matterials on how to create user defined Ant Tasks at Extending-Ant-Task
